Look For 3 Black Cards In Folders!

(The three labelled black cards you will find in your child's communication backpack.  Please remove them tonight, complete the activity then return them completed before Oct. 18th.)

Celebrating Us!

Our classroom is made up of a unique mix of children with a variety of histories, passions, hobbies, families and celebrations.

To help build community, it is important for the members of the class to learn about each other.  To find out what we have in common and how we are unique. This term we will be exploring the Social Studies unit:

1.2 Moving Forward with the Past: My Family, My History and My Community
General Outcome: Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how changes over time have affected their families and influenced how their families and communities are today.                                                       –Alberta Program of Studies

This unit focuses on the children learning about their families’ history, culture, celebrations and changes, which they can compare and contrast with their peers.

Your child will need their parents’ help to learn the unique and special things about their families.  We will be sending home a series of projects and requests to help your child with this unit.

My, Family, My hobbies, My celebrations:(Return by Oct. 18th)

Your child will come home with three labelled black cards.
1.  On the 1st card, glue a picture of your immediate family (the people you live with or spend a lot of time with.)  If you child lives at two homes, send an additional picture, which I will mount and label at school.
2.  On the 2nd card, glue a picture of a celebration that is important in your family. (Many of us celebrate many things, so think of one that is most important to your family, or that is unique).
3.  On the 3rd card, glue a picture of a hobby/activity that is important in your family.

(Choose photographs that show details that help show the event/activity. If you don’t have a photo, you can print and cut out pictures from the computer/magazine to glue on your card or you can make a detailed drawing.) Please glue the picture on the opposite side of the label so we can still see your child’s name.

We will be sorting and comparing these cards in the classroom during group activities and your child will have an opportunity to talk and write about their cards.  Before you send them in, it would be very beneficial to talk to your child about their choices so they have vocabulary and descriptive details to share.

Reminder:

Birthdays:  Montessori Around the Sun Celebration

On your child’s birthday (in May/June if a summer birthday or the week before if on the weekend), please send to school one picture of an important event/experience for each year of your child’s life.  (You may want to also include a birth picture). In the ceremony, your child will describe what happened that year. Please work with your child to select the photos and to practice what they will say. (Please write, or have your child write), reference notes on the back of each picture (so a teacher can help them if they forget).   This activity helps show the changes that have happened in your child’s life.

Today we continued to talk about how changes affect people.  Have your child talk about the book we read today.  Ask them about what big change happened in Alexander's Life.  Encourage them to contrast Alexander's life from BEFORE the change to AFTER the change.
