Looking At Art

Today we explored Vincent Van Gogh's painting: Sunflowers.

Children discussed how the picture made them feel and whether they liked it.  We talked about how art can evoke a variety of emotions....A piece art can make us happy, curious, confused, mad, calm...or many emotions at the same time!
Its main job, is to make us think and to evoke an emotional response.

I can analyze art.

Today we started a process called "Looking At Art".  It is a series of questions that help the viewer look deeply at a piece of work.
Today we started by looking for :
- different lines used in the piece....straight (vertical, horizontal, diagonal), curvy, wavy......
- different shapes found in the piece.... circles, triangles, rectangles...
- different colours used.  Here we used description (bright yellow, or warm colours)

...and described where we found them.  Ex.  I can see triangle shapes in the green leaves of a sunflower.

I can reproduce a piece of art.

We also begin our own reproductions of Van Gogh's Sunflowers.  This afternoon we talked about a sketch and worked on our backgrounds.

We learned about how a page can be positioned in Portrait or Landscape.
We learned that the subject of a painting is the focal point, and that remaining negative space is the background.

We used a tempera "wash" to do our backgrounds of the table and the wall.

We learned how to do a "wash".  We learned that a big, thick brush works best and that long horizontal brushstrokes are fast and create a smooth finish.  We worked to leave no white space and to have a uniform background.

Tomorrow we will add thick tempera paint to create our subject of the vase and the flowers.   We will choose smaller brushes so we can add more details.
