Halloween Math Game

Catch the GhostsEach player puts a counter on start. Players take turns to roll the dice and move forward that many spaces. If the space has a clue, the player finds a ghost to match the clue and catches that ghost by covering it with a counter. If no ghosts match the clue, the player doesn't cover any ghost on the turn. If a player lands on Boo! they have to take a counter off a covered ghost. The winner is the player who catches the last ghost.
(Numbers to 20 OR Numbers to 100 OR Numbers to 999)

Spooky Flashlight Reading and Halloween Parade Tomorrow!

Reminder:  Children can wear costumes tomorrow for Halloween.  Please no scary makeup, face masks or weapons.    Kids should also bring a flashlight for their literacy group.

I can learn how my peers celebrate.
Today most children looked at our celebration chart and wrote observations in their learning journal.  Look at some of the words we used to compare and practice making observations at home.

I can interpret charts.

people                    popular /common

most                                            least
-many                                            -few
-almost everyone                      -only_____
-more                                            -less
-everyone                                    -no one

Examples of sentences/observations:
Everyone in my class celebrates their birthday.
More people celebrate Canada Day than Stampede.
11 people celebrate Chinese New Year.

We also shared our My Celebrations cards.

The children walked around the room and looked at each others' cards and looked for clues about their celebrations, like special clothing, decorations and season.
We talked about question words, (WHO, WHERE, WHEN, WHAT, HOW, WHY), and brainstormed questions we could ask our friends:
What are you celebrating?
Who do you usually celebrate this with?  (Talked about words like usually, often, always, sometimes, just this once...)
Where do you celebrate?
How many days is this celebration?

In partners, kids took turns asking each other about their special celebration.  Then we used a venn diagram and a same/different t chart to compare and contrast some different celebrations.

IRIS

IRIS is a tool students and a families can use to record student learning. We talked about being a good digital citizen today. The following picture is a contract each student signed,

https://www.cbe.ab.ca/dashboard/Pages/default.aspx

This a link to a CBE website where you can find IRIS. Students usernames are their CBE student ID and their password is one they have created themselves (and hopefully remember). Each student will have posted something by the end of this week. Check your child's IRIS profile to see what he/she has posted.

First lockdown practice of the year

Yesterday we had our first lockdown practice of the year. Just like fire drills, it's important students understand what to do in case of a lockdown. We talk to students about how sometimes there are parents and/or adults in the school who do not have a visitors pass or there are students who are having a hard time self-regulating so it's in everyone's best interest to stay in their classroom. Constable Rich, our school safety liaison was here yesterday to greet students after the lockdown. Please talk with your child to see if they have any further questions or concerns before our next practice.

Celebration Art

Since some of our friends are celebrating Diwali this weekend, we made some fireworks art.  We realized that people use fireworks to celebrate many occasions like Canada Day, Chinese New Year and Stampede.

You will get a chance to see them tomorrow at Conferences.

REMEMBER PICK UP IS AT 1:20pm, as conferences start at 1:30pm.

Sense of smell and Library

Today we explored our sense of smell.  We've been learning about our senses through exploration of various centers. Today students worked with the Stinky Dinosaur Swamp. Smelling books as they read. Sorting animals and insects based on what body parts they use to smell and matching tea smells to the specific kind of tea. Ask your child about each of these centers and which one was their favourite!

Every Monday, students have the opportunity to go to the school library. They are independently choosing the books they want to bring home. If your child is bringing home books too difficult for their reading level (which most probably are) then please take time to read to your child. Even if you have chapter books, reading aloud a chapter a night helps students develop comprehension skills that they'll need once they start reading chapter books.
Students are going to start being independent with their library exchange. Each Monday, during afternoon work period, they'll have to return their books and get new ones. It'll be their responsibility to remember their book and exhange it.

We Scare Hunger- CPJ FOOD DRIVE

WE SCARE HUNGER!

NO ONE SHOULD GO HUNGRY, BUT IN CANADA 1 in 7 CHILDREN GO TO SCHOOL HUNGRY.  36% OF FOOD BANK USERS IN CANADA ARE CHILDREN AND YOUTH!

THIS HALLOWEEN, BE HUNGER HEROES
Take action this Halloween to collect non-perishable food items at school and in your community to help stop hunger before it strikes.

Starting on Tuesday October 15th, the Me to We club will begin to collect non-perishable food items. We will continue to collect non-perishable food items until November 4th. All food items will be donated to the Calgary food bank to help hungry Calgarians.

Classroom Challenge: Which classroom can collect the most non-perishable items?
As teachers collect donated goods from students during October 15th to November 4th, they will tally the amount collected. The class to collect the most food items will have their class picture proudly displayed on the Me to We club’s Hall of Fame display case for everyone to see!

Many food banks ask for the following non-perishable items:
  • Rice
  • Flour
  • Pasta
  • Canned fish and meat (Tuna, salmon, corned beef and chicken)
  • Stew and soup
  • Canned or dried beans

Important dismissal changes and Conferences next week!

This email went home yesterday. It is very important all students/parents are aware of the upcoming change to dismissal.

Dear Families,

Hand to hand dismissal it typically part of Kindergarten dismissal protocol.  We have extended this courtesy to all of our grade 1 and 2 families for the beginning of this school year. Starting on October 21st, grade 1 and 2 students will be dismissed at the end of the day from their classrooms by the teacher. Teachers will not be standing at the door to ensure you are there waiting for your child. This is a great next step for many students to build their sense of independence and responsibility.

We know that you always strive to be on time but it is important to help your child consider what to do if you are not there at the end of the day. Some topics you may want to discuss with your child:
  • What will they do if you are late?
  • Will they go with an arranged adult or to a spot?
  • How long should they wait before they go to the front of the school to get help from the office?
  • Where should they play while they wait?
We will continue to support our students with their independence and their sense of safety by:
  • Classroom discussions about safety
  • Coaching students about where to go if they find themselves outside the school building without their class, a staff member, or a parent
  • Identifying safe adults in the building and on the playground identified with CBE and CJP badges

Also, please ensure you are going online to book your conference with us next week. Each family has the opportunity to meet with the teachers for 15 minutes and discuss your child's growth.

On Friday, we are going to make a chart about our celebrations.  Have a discussion about the celebrations you observe in your family so your child will be able to share, which celebrations they participate in for our chart.
Ex. Ramadan, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Diwali, Kwanza, Chinese New Year........

Sense of Sight

Today we explored centers related to our sense of sight. We talked about how to care for our eyes and what people do who may have some loss of vision. Students were able to use magnifying glasses, binoculars, microscopes and explore the braille alphabet.
